From This post in PDN forum.
Final version velvet
If you look at it closely, you will see this texture looks very real
Curtains in a theater?
A skirt part of the dress? Like Cinderella's dress?
I don't know

What amazes me about you, Ash, is not that you make consistently god-like images, its the diverse subject mater of your work. You make so many different things well.
Oh, BTW...

Thank you
I usually pay attention to environment around me. (For what things look like, how the light and shadow are, etc etc...)
Also have a wide range of interest helps
And I try to help out other users by trying to think of ways to draw what they are having trouble with. Good challenge & training
This is why my drawings includes a lot of different subject.

You know what, Ash...I might just have to try.
Believe it or not, I only attempted a gemstone once and it came out pretty crappy (then again, I'd only been PdN-ing for a few weeks, at the time).
I plan on revisiting your earlier tutorials, and if I manage to reproduce the look of the v3 gemstone image you posted, I'll do a "how the heck did they do that" deconstruction tutorial.
I've made a few forays into ice cubes, but so far I'm supremely dissatisfied with how the edges and corners are coming out (fyi, semitransparent gradient layer -> shape3d cube, one side at a time -> dents -> smaller cube with different dents settings -> various blurs). the blending's not bad, but those edges and corners are killing me.
I think you gave a hint in the "aircraft carrier at the edge of the world" help me thread, so I'll probably look at that again

@Ben_R_R:
Thanks
Version 1 just looked like crap...The idea was there but...It was my 1st tut outta a request from Oma
Version 2 looked much better.
There was a version 2.5 (I put it on dA too)
Version 3 looks much more glass like and translucent.
That's why I gave it a version jump
@drakaan:
For the ice cube, I'll have to see what you mean.
For the gem, a hint:
The basic idea is the same since version 1, just the pattern/texture have changed.
So, just worry about getting the patterns
