I tried to make a simple tutorial on making foliage. You can obviously experiment with different settings to see varied results.

I hope you find this easy to follow. :P

I would have never thought to use Mandelbrot Fractal to make that foliage.... :o

I think it's from trying to make an Ash-styled glass block that had been occupying my frontal lobe lately. :ouch:

I've struggled so much with it, but that was a year ago when I actually found out this method when I made my sailboat in the moonlight.

Hmm, I've been looking for a good method to create foliage. I'll have to play around with this. :D

I usually don't find many tuts I wanna try anymore.
I didn't follow this tut step by step, I only followed the Mandelbrot idea.
But I like it for opening people's minds to new ideas.
Very nice.

Here is my take on this idea. (I guess I could make more layers to make it have more depth...)

Makes total sense...tress are generally fractal in nature (as are leaves)...did you try Julia fractals at all?

I see some interesting possibilities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal) with other types...

Thank you all. :P

@draakan: No, I haven't tried Julia fractal to make trees or other plants, but I made a Chinese fan once using Julia fractal and then the kaleidoscope plugin. I lost the file, but it was a neat result.
